History, culture and mountain scenery in one full day. We begin in Nizwa, the ancient capital, exploring a souq known for dates, halwa, pottery, silver and spices before climbing the round tower of Nizwa Fort to hear how one of Oman's most important cities defended itself. A 4WD is compulsory for the road up Jebel Akhdar, the Green Mountain: at about 2,300 m the air is cool and the views take in agricultural terraces, traditional villages and, in season, the rose gardens that supply Oman's famous rosewater. On the way down we walk through Birkat Al Mouz, where the UNESCO-listed Falaj Al Khatmeen has irrigated the plantations for centuries.
